Tree House on the Saigon River

When we travel, part of the experience for us, especially with kids, is the hotel/resort. It’s not about being the most expensive resort, or the most luxurious or the biggest, its actually much more about the overall experience, the intangibles that will make the trip memorable. On our recent trip to Vietnam we wanted each hotel which we stayed in to be authentic to the area and offer something unique.

When it came to booking a hotel property in Ho Chi Minh, I really had to research the area. While there were many five-star hotels and luxury apartment options available, it still felt like being in any city and I really didn’t know what to expect from Hoi Chi Min and if there would be much for the kids to do.

In hindsight, I’m so lucky with the hotel we stayed in as it was just perfect for us. I did not take much of a liking to Hoi Chi Minh city itself – I don’t know if that was because it was super-hot and humid or due to the fact we struggled to find kid friendly activities. We visited the standard tourists’ spots such as the central post office, park, Ben Thanh market and the observation deck at Bitexco Financial Tower but that took a few hours and was that great!

At the Grand Central Post Office, we did meet a gorgeous little Vietnamese girl – she was a Girl Scout who every weekend along with her mother and brother visited all the tourist hotspots in order to chat to tourists to improve her English! She was amazing, so polite, confident and very grateful that we sat and chatted with her and exchanged a full dialog. It was a genuinely wonderful experience and speaks to the resiliency and creativity of the Vietnamese people.

I won’t keep you waiting any longer from reading about the stunning resort which we booked in Hoi Chi Minh. An Lam Luxury Retreat is perfectly located on the banks of the Saigon River. Nestled in a lush jungle vibe, this 19-suite luxury property is not only child friendly but offers a peaceful hideaway from the hustle and bustle of the city and a sense of escapism. You can get to the retreat either by speed boat during the day or by car at night with complimentary airport pickups.

The retreat doesn’t have a reception desk; instead each room has an assigned butler who checks you in to the hotel via your room. With only 19 suites, the resort is small but very misleading as you only see a few doors which open to people’s suites.

Our room was next to the pool which was perfect for the kids to simply roll out of bed and dive in. There is also a gym and a cute spa. There is one kitchen which is at the side of the property with one large open window for you to see what’s going on inside as the only restaurant is a few meters away on the water’s edge providing a great view of the river and offers a great selection of dishes.

Next to the restaurant was an amazing private dining area in a tree, kind of like a tree house. It had a large table catering for a group of up to 10 people. The kids were blown away with eating dinner in a tree house and added to the adventure, so you can guess where we had dinner every night. The staff were amazing and certainly catered to our every need – anything you needed, you just call your butler and she would arrange everything.

Because we enjoyed the property so much we didn’t leave except to visit the city on one occasion which we did via speed boat down the Saigon river, which gave us a great insight into the size of the city. Then we were back at the resort for more rest and relaxation while the kids had a blast in the pool.

The kids loved staying at An Lam, to them it really was an adventure in a jungle, and I felt comfortable to let them wonder around the property on their own as it’s quaint and small. They ate in the tree house, played in the pool and used their imagination when exploring the grounds playing hide n seek in the jungle foliage and looking for creepy crawlies –fortunately the only creepy they saw was a giant snail!!

So, if Hoi Chi Minh is on your itinerary, then An Lam should be at the top of your list as a place to stay. Its unique, its adventurous, its comfortable, its beautiful and offers a different perspective to the city that you will end up exploring.

Visit Vietnam

This summer we visited central Vietnam as a family with our 3 children age 6 years and under. We broke up the trip into three stops in order to see as much of Vietnam as we could and to also give the children different experiences.

Our Vietnam adventure went a little like this…

We flew direct on Emirates from Dubai to Ho Chi Minh City and then we took an hour’s domestic flight on Vietnam Airlines to Hue which is a tiny airport (you can also fly into DaNang which is an international airport and a major, booming city in central Vietnam ) then a 40 minute drive to our resort Laguna Lang Co - Angsana and Banyan Tree Resort.

Driving towards the resort it was clear that we were in a remote untouched area, with lush green forests (
Truong Son mountain range) on one side and a stunning coastline with sweeping white beaches on the other. As we entered the resort, there was an 18-hole Nick Faldo golf course, an organic farm, staff cycling around and further up the path was the entrance to the Angsana Hotel and the Banyan Tree.

Both resorts are situated on a secluded beach with the Banyan Tree resort expanding up the lush mountain cliff while the Angsana resort extends down the private pristine beach. Both resorts offer villas/rooms with private pools and stunning views. On one side of the resort is a river which runs between both properties where you can kayak or enjoy other fun water sports. While many on site activities are offered on the beach such as surfing, jet skis, boating and TAV (quad biking) you can also enjoy the many mountain trails alone or with the hotel tour guides. Bikes are available to cycle around the resort or on a tour outside of the property. We all went out on bikes, with one of my kids sitting on the back of my mountain bike and the other two had their own bikes.

We stayed at the Angsana Resort in a beautifully spacious three floor villa, with stunning floor to ceiling windows which made the beach views even more wonderful. I don’t know what it was about the beds in our rooms, but I can honestly say we all slept amazingly well, with me having to wake the kids up in the morning in order to make breakfast (a few mornings we never made it in time!) Even though we had a private pool, the kids enjoyed the large main hotel pool which wrapped around the resort and opened up into small private peaceful areas and jacuzzi spots.

Between both the properties there is an excellent choice of restaurants, from fine dining to more relaxed alfresco beach dining. I highly recommend Saffron restaurant located on the cliff front at Banyan Tree - try to pre book as it’s a small restaurant and always busy due to the wonderful food and brilliant sun set views.

I have to say, even though this was a large property and the occupancy was high, I still felt very secluded and it never felt busy. With so much to do on site and a private beach that went on for miles you never felt like you saw the same person twice.

Watch our video: https://youtu.be/xxImX0iOwp4

As the resort is located between 3 UNESCO Heritage spots, one being the world famous Hoi An, there is not a shortage of excursions to enjoy. Day trips are well priced, and you can either go by the hotel shuttle bus or like we did, rent a hotel car and driver – they are super cheap and much more convenient.

We actually only left the hotel once to visit a place which has become popular literally over night with a picture that went viral on Instagram – since it was only an hour’s drive from our hotel, we had to go. More on that below…

DaNa Hills - Sun World

After seeing that famous “Gods Hands” golden bridge picture go viral, it went quickly onto my ‘must see’ places to visit. An hour drive from our hotel, we didn’t know what to expect. I thought we would simply come across a bridge, walk over it, take pictures and then leave. But NO, we were in for an amazing surprise.

We drove up to a large parking area where we were informed we had to buy tickets and take the cable car to the top of the mountain. I showed the staff the picture of the bridge I wanted to see, and they said it was on top of the mountain. Still unsure but ready for the adventure we bought tickets which were super cheap and joined the flow of people, of which there were many! We walked through a temple like building and followed the signs to the cable cars, which we entered with a cable pod to ourselves.

As the cable car started moving up the mountain, we started seeing spectacular views overlooking the mountains, waterfalls, streams running down the mountain, the ocean in the distance, with DaNang city glimmering in the sunlight. The journey seemed to take forever as we were going higher and higher. As we increased to 1400 feet we saw our first glimpse of the now famous ‘gods hands’ bridge. We got out of the cable car and walked towards the bridge - our first impression was that it was smaller than we thought, but how on earth did they build this on the top of a huge mountain?! Taking in the view we walked from one end to another, coming out to an area which looked like building ruins (for effect) and a vision of a white 27 meters tall white Buddha in the distance, only to realize there was another cable car taking you even higher - 1487 meters above sea level.  Now this we had to see.

Once at the top and what felt like we were over looking the world the doors opened to what can only be described as…. wait for it….an adventure park!!!!

Music, dancers, entertainers, street festival, princesses, men on stilts, jugglers, fire acts, free beer vouchers being handed out from the German Beer Bar, restaurants and believe it or not, two hotels…it was all happening. The place was teeming with tourists. Welcome to Sun World the most surreal place I have ever seen. At the top of this mountain range, they had built miniature versions of global cities and their cultures with the standout being a Paris street replete with a miniature Notre Dame.

This place is well worth a visit just because it truly is a bizarre but exhilarating experience; go early as it can get hot and very busy:

After spending a fantastic relaxing week at the glorious and peaceful Lang Co, we were soon enough off to our next destination in Vietnam… Hoi An

Gili Lankanfushi

Its been a while since I’ve visited the stunning atolls of the Maldives. I’ve been lucky enough to have visited the islands a couple of times with my husband pre kids and once with my eldest daughter when she was 3 months old (my crazy twins haven’t had the pleasure yet!) . We’ve stayed at a couple of different resorts such as the Banyan Tree and the Six Senses located from the North to the South Atoll. However this resort photos I will keep hidden from my kids prying eyes. You may ask WHY…. Well its truly one of the most amazing resorts I have ever visited and what I would call "heaven on earth". This particular resort has something most resorts don’t, and that’s a wraparound water slide that goes directly into the clear blue ocean – YES thats right, a playground in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Soneva Gili by Six Senses - now know as Gili Lankanfushi Private Reserve can only be reached by boat about 20 minutes from Male (the capital and the airport). It has the traditional thatched-roof villa look one expects to see in the Maldives, but this one comes with four bedrooms with celling to floor windows, a cinema room, Mr & Mrs. Friday - butlers who are at your beckon call from the butler's wing, an infinity pool and a made-for-Instagram water slide that winds directly into the crystal clear lagoon.

We had so much fun staying at this property – even though it wasn’t for long. It was just me and my hubby on a kid free break, however after the constant splashing into the sea from the slide, chilling in every room, we kind of felt like we were rattling around. We actually wish that this vacation had been with our family and friends so we could have shared the experience with loved ones.

Just imagine the kids running around this stunning reserve, the screams of joy would be the only way in which you would know they are still there, as they certainly wouldn’t ask you for anything.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8h15E-uRvU

The resort prides itself on being an eco resort with most of the food grown on the property grounds and they encourage guests to practice being sustainable during their stay. The Gili Lankanfushi attention to detail is second to none, they truly have thought of everything. If you want to visit the main property they have lovely dining experiences and the food is fresh and amazing.

An added bonus about the Maldives is that both Fly Dubai and Emirates fly direct to Male which takes 4 hours 10 mins and if like my husband you need a visa to get anywhere, then this is the place for you as it’s visa on arrival! Whoo Hoo!

Maldives and resorts like Gili Lankanfushi are once in a lifetime experiences so if you’re feeling that urge to live a little, this is where you do it - to find out more you can visit

A Hidden Gem Seminyak

Nestled in the heart of stylish Seminyak on Bali’s south-west coast is what I can only describe as a ‘little hidden gem’. Down a discreet side street off the main road - right next door to the W Hotel - are a set of simple gates. However, once inside the gates you are transported into a magical ‘Moroccan Nights’ wonderland.

Sayang D’amour is a 6 all-ensuite bedroom massive villa with Moroccan inspired interiors mixed with local Balinese style and flair. The lush tropical gardens contain a large swimming pool with coconut palms and scented frangipanis making this home the ideal hideaway and escapism.

Along with two other families, each with three kids in tow, we took over this stunning property and instantly made ourselves feel right at home. The house came with the sweetest staff, a chef, kitchen help, cleaners and security – all on hand 24/7 to assist with any help we required.

The house has 6 bedrooms – 4 in the main house and two large stand-alone bedrooms next to the pool, which actually looked like 2 large villas. We took one of these rooms which was the master bedroom with the most amazing bathroom I have ever seen plus doors which opened out to the outdoor shower. Now if you know me or have read a few of my posts, you will know I love baths and I will book a hotel room based on the bathroom! Well this bath took me to heaven. A large freestanding cast iron bath sat in the middle of the room, which was big enough to fit me and the three kids.

The main house had a large open kitchen, dining area and seating area - great space for all +15 of us to relax in when we needed a little time out of the sun. To the side was a separate TV room for the kids.

The main reason why I loved this house was because of the garden space – the pool was big enough for all the kids to go crazy, jumping in and out on their floaties and any of the kids that didn’t want to swim they amused themselves around the garden. Most days the dads did a work out in the garden, the kids entertained themselves while we lay on the beds, with a glass in hand soaking up the sun.

When it came to eating, our chef catered to our every need including any dietary requests and what all the fussy eaters like to eat. They cooked a wonderful breakfast spread every morning and on alternative days we would have lunch or dinner. The kids loved the fact that the chef was so attentive to their every need. My eldest fell in love with his freshly made pancakes and still asks if she can have the “pancakes from Bali”.

I really cannot find any fault in this this property - not only was it extremely spacious and we had 18 people staying in it, but it was really comfortable, the service was great, and the location was just perfect. We were a stone’s throw away from the W Hotel and the beach and 5 mins walk to the Alila Hotel. Despite our pool scene, we managed to squeeze in time to a get a day pass for both hotels to check out their pool scene!

One day we decided to have a kids free, adult only afternoon and left the kids at home while we went to the urber cool Mrs Sippy. With the music and party scene in full swing we walked in and instantly let our hair down and enjoyed a cocktail or two AND a few of us did jump from the diving board which stands at 5 meter high with everyone watching, clapping and urging you on.

On the main Seminyak road you can find many cool shops and market stands – I think the ‘hottest’ item to buy and which was all over social media was the round straw cross over bag. The bags were so cute that we made sure we all bought one including the kids.

One morning we left the kids at home with their friends, and my husband and I went exploring on a moped. The mopeds actually came with the house and can be used for the guest’s convenience. Now the idea of this particular adventure was to check out a cool surfer’s beach which was about an hour away from Seminyak. I’m not a fan of motor bikes but mopeds I can handle…that is until we hit the busy streets with traffic coming at you in every direction. I felt like I was in a mouse trap and we just needed a gap in the traffic to escape. It was pretty scary but well worth it because once you hit the quiet roads, the views and the calmness was tranquil.

Bali is a foodie goldmine - full of many great eating spots that are also ridiculously cheap. Even the more luxurious Michelin star restaurants are very well priced compared to other cities. The current trend in cuisine especially in Cangu which is the next town down the coast from Seminyak is all healthy eating, plant based, vegan food. But there something about the way these outlets are doing it. Most cafes restaurants look hip, they have a large Instagram fan base, and they entice you in with their secret ingredients. One of our favorites was Kynd Community - think pink walls, large palm tree leaves, and photogenic healthy food.

Staying on the food topic, below are a few of our fav restaurants which we visited while in Bali:

Mama San - Dinner

One of award-winning Chef Will Meyrick's Bali based restaurants. At Mamasan you can step into colonial Britain in Shanghai during the 1920s, with marble top mah-jong tables and oversized tan leather chesterfields, in a purpose designed industrial high ceiling warehouse. Reservations a must and smart/casual attire

Metis - Dinner

Chef Nicolas 'Doudou' Tourneville, formerly of Kafe Warisan, brings his legendary talent and culinary artistry to the table with a masterful combination of French Mediterranean cuisine. Flawless service in one of Bali's most elegantly sophisticated settings is just the beginning of this seduction into the depths of the five senses.

Reservations a must and smart attire.

Kiln – lunch or dinner

KILN had just opened when we visited, yet we had heard that it had been a hit since day one. It sure didn’t disappoint. With an eastern Mediterranean menu, we ordered literary everything available. It was extremely well priced with top class food for a casual dining experience.

Sea Circus – Breakfast or lunch

Sea Circus is not an actual circus. Its a ‘restaurant, cocktail bar & coffee den’. Its also one of the most photographed places in Bali. It’s a sharing concept, which I love as you get to try so many dishes, my personal favorite was the taco bar menu… yummy!

Ku de Ta – offers the best sunset views

As Bali's original sunset destination, this restaurant, bar and beach lounge has panoramic views where you can enjoy dinner or drinks. Plus, their resident DJ has a great soundtrack to get you in the mood.

Naughty Nuri’s – lunch or dinner

Famous for their killer bbq pork spare ribs and twisted martinis.

In 1994 a young man named Brian Aldinger from New Jersey was traveling around Java, Indonesia when he met a beautiful and interesting young woman called IsnuriSuryatmi (Nuri). They fell in love and were married shortly after.

When holidaying in Bali they decided that Ubud, (the artist's area in the hills of Bali) was the place for them and opened a small warung in 1995 where they could sell some drinks, make a few simple dishes and talk to the customers. So Naughty Nuri’s was born! Nuri says the name was chosen because she was Nuri and her husband Brian was Naughty. Before too long, many of the local expatriate community and some of the local Balinese people would come by and chat with the couple and some friends suggested that Naughty Nuri’s put a small BBQ at the front of the warung. The pork ribs became so popular that the BBQ became one of the most photographed tourist attractions in Ubud, if not the whole of Bali. Then they opened in Seminyak and still to this day attract large crowds.

SO - to sum up Bali, I now understand why people stay for the entire summer or end up packing up and moving there. I love the pace of life, the convenience of everything, the laid back chilled social scene, the abundance of great places to eat and all being for a fraction of the cost of living in Dubai.

Put it this way, if I suddenly drop off the radar, you will find me chilling in a secluded spot somewhere in Bali.

Don’t forget to read my blog post on Unbelievable Ubud – another magical place to visit in Bali.

Sri Lanka – Arabella On Boossa

A luxury boutique beachfront hotel evoking the traditional Sri Lankan tropical Bawa style of architecture with a unique yet spacious contemporary and minimalist interior is the perfect family friendly place to stay when visiting Galle.

Arabella on Boossa is a stunning 8-room boutique beachfront property, designed with comfort and understated leisure in mind. We had the pleasure of staying for a week in the largest room in the house located on the third floor, just above the second shared living room. Room 8 is a large bedroom with a white 4-poster bed frame, lounge area and enough space to neatly fit 3 extra beds for the kids. This room also comes with a large balcony with gorgeous views of the hotel pool, garden and the beach.

The true identity of this property is that the Australian owner has taken into consideration their guests every need and maximized the space to reflect that. Some of the family suites offer bunk beds and loft-style makeshift floors with a ladder utilizing the space to its fullest. Young children are specifically catered for with well though out food, (including delicious) ice-cream options and pool and garden entertainment activities, including a daily creative arts table for late afternoon while the parents relax in the garden or pool.

The main eating area is at the side of the hotel – an all-open space where breakfast served with a morning breeze is simply wonderful. The menu offers traditional Sri Lanka cuisine along with the usual western favorites and a kids menu too.

The whole hotel is ordained with white sofas, modern ornaments and groups of glass vases stacked with large green tropical leaves. Most of the day, the common doors are left open so the sea breeze fills the air and you can hear the sounds of the waves crashing. It’s a peaceful and comfortable property, which immediately feels like home.

Arabella on Boossa is located 10 minutes from Galle a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Galle is a truly multi-cultural town, filled with hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, shops and especially in the evening and nights is teeming with tourists. Tuk Tuk’s or private cars are available to take you anywhere you wish to visit and the colonial Galle train station is nearby. Personally we enjoyed taking tuk tuks everywhere even though 5 people was a bit of a squeeze in the back, but the kids found it highly entertaining and occupied themselves by counting all the multi-colored tuk tuks we passed along the way

Here's our list of family things to do while in Galle:

Surf Lessons – We signed the kids up to a surf school, which was close by to the hotel. It’s literally a shack on the beach with local surfer dudes as the teachers. The staff gave the kids a quick run though the moves before taking them into the sea, staying by their side the entire time. My son didn’t last too long in the water as when the sea is choppy its pretty exhausting not to mention you spend a lot of time under the waves, but my eldest got to grips with it straight away and considering she has no fear and a personality where she is determined to do what she puts her mind too, she stayed in for hours. While the kids had their lesson, we enjoyed freshly squeezed juices on the beach.

Galle Lighthouse is a nice spot for a walk along the city walls and a perfect place to enjoy an ice cream. A must, Insta-worthy photo stop too!

Galle Town – inside the Galle town walls are alleyways of shops, restaurants and bars. The architecture and interior is a mix of British colonial and Dutch influence while remarkably, within a few square meters of each other you can find places of worship from all the main religions.

Take a train to Walligama and hang out the open window and doors… don’t worry its pretty safe and a cool way to ride the train

A day at Unawatuna Beach – white sands, surfing and lunch spots on the sand. A literal beach paradise and a magnet for backpackers

Japanese Peace Pagoda – we hired a tuk tuk driver for the morning and visited the famous round Buddhist temple which sits upon a hill with views of the coast. While the temple was nice, the kids enjoyed exploring the secret beach at the bottom of the hill. A downward hike through bushes and many steps opens up onto a secret beach with tree swings and a café. Its fun to do but its not the beach I would go to as I certainly wouldn’t fancy carrying a family of five with beach paraphernalia up and down that hike!

Stilt fisherman – spot the fisherman sitting on the stilts in the water catching fish. An old, antiquated method of fishing that still holds its charm.

Turtle sanctuary – a top tourist spot but worth it as the money they receive goes towards supporting the local wildlife and helping rehabilitate the turtles.

Fruit Market – I enjoyed visiting the many stalls of fresh fruit, all laid out neatly providing an array of bright colors – the naughty side of me wanted to pull out an apple from the bottom of the pile just to watch the entire stack crumble, but instead I picked the ones on the top of the pile just so I didn’t leave a dent in their proud, product display master piece!
